I was at Wolf Creek Golf Links, Inc., located in Olathe, Kansas, at a Kansas City Cup match a few weeks ago. and I must say it was a very beautiful golf course. We won the match, which would have made it so much better, but I thought after reviewing the course while it was still fresh in my mind.
If you don’t know or haven’t heard of Wolf Creek, you’re in for a treat. Firstly, it is a men’s only club. And that literally means no women are allowed. Bartenders are men. The girls in the car are men. Everyone there is a man. It’s a really strange experience, but I think some people are looking for that kind of environment.
This men-only course makes it a very exclusive golf course, and it’s 100% private (except for events like the KC Cup, where we got to play because of the format). I don’t know how much is owed to be a member, but based on the size of the course, I’m sure they are quite large.
The course itself, although located in Olathe, Kansas, is very different. It is in the southern part of Olathe, in the middle of a swath of fields. Solitude offers great peace and a great golfing experience.
Driving up the course is not a grand experience as you can have at some other exclusive places. The clubhouse is modest, neither overly extravagant nor substandard. Among the other rooms are a bar, a locker room and a dining room (after a round I glanced at a poker table located behind the room full of gentlemen, which I was going to consider a friendly game). The course is gated, but again, doesn’t leave an air of something as specific as is rumored.
I think the reason why the clubhouse and facilities are so modest is twofold. First, with only boys, how extraordinary must it be? Isn’t it nice to say you belong to an all-male golf club? Second, given the size of the course – it was gorgeous – it appears that all their money goes into the upkeep and upgrade of the golf course.
Starting off, the range was very good. It’s hay, they have a bunch of balls set up in range ball bags at each station (about 20 stations), and they have a bunch of bags full of tees for your enjoyment. Out of bounds, you hit many different flag sticks at many different yardages. It was in great shape.
If you ever play here, be sure to put a couple of putts on the green. The greens are firm and sharp, and cut beautifully. They turn out to be true, but it will take some getting used to because they are faster than your average green. For me, to be honest, the day we played, I thought the greens were a little too fast. But I think it happened because we played so early in the season. In the middle of summer, I could see them moving at lightning speed.
As far as the course is concerned, there is a lot of volatility and a lot of holes with little or no ripple. There are two par three in particular, one on the front nine, one on the back, which I particularly liked. The first was a slightly sloping one with the green in front and water guarding the right (everyone missed the tall and left – go figure). The other par three sit high on the tee box which must be at least 100 feet in the green before descending. This is a great looking t-shot.
Overall, I would rate the course 9 out of 10. The course was great from tee to green, and I had a great time. The only thing holding it back from being 10 was the wow factor (though one of my opponents was a former major league All-Star pitcher – he was good – and he was a decent golfer). It was a great course, but I didn’t feel any different as a golfer when I did – that’s what takes 10 from me.
